More Hydropower Stations to be Built Along Yellow RiverChina plans to build 25 major hydropower stations in the upper reaches of the Yellow River in the next five years, according to a government source.The 25 large and medium-sized power stations, the country's largest staircase power station group when completed, will be built along the 918 kilometers of the river. Up to ten billion kilowatt/hour of electricity will be generated to ease the power shortage in the east and central Chinese provinces. With abundant water resources and great drops, the upper reaches of the Yellow River is known as an ideal place for hydropower development. By now, seven major hydropower stations such as Lijiaxia, Liujiaxia and Qingtongxia, have been built with the combined installed capacity of 5.61 million kilowatt/hour. However, only 35.3 percent of the hydropower resources have been utilized in the region. Some 20 sites are waiting for exploitation in the upper reaches of the river. |
