China's E-Commerce Websites Tops 1,000: Survey

A nationwide survey released China had had more than 1,100 consumer related e-commerce websites by the end of the first quarter this year.

However, Chinese e-commerce is still at very preliminary stage, with sales volume much lower than developed countries, according to a survey released April 27.

The survey was jointly conducted by the Computer and Microelectronics Industry Development Research Center under the Ministry of Information Industry and CCIDNET Consulting, a network company.

In 1999, China's e-retailing sales volume totaled 55 million yuan, accounting for merely 0.018 per thousand of the country's total retail sales.

Only 20.3 percent of Internet users have on-line shopping experience and only 40 percent of them are satisfied with on-line transactions.

Among all the e-retailing websites, 8848.net is mostly used by Chinese Internet users. Eachnet and Yabuy both rank first among on- line auction websites. More than 80 percent of the Internet users worry about the security of on-line transactions.

Although consumer related e-commerce is still at its early stages in China, Chinese Internet users are confident in on-line transactions, according to the survey.

Nearly 90 percent of Chinese Internet users would like to take part in at least one kind of on-line transaction this year, and 70 percent of them will experience on-line shopping, which shows that this market has great potential in the future.
