China Strengthens Quality Control in Fishery Industry

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has decided to set this year as a quality year for the fishery sector to enable consumers to enjoy quality-controlled aquatic products.

Vice-Minister of Agriculture Liu Jian said at a press conference Wednesday that to enhance quality control is also urgently needed with China's approaching entry into the World Trade Organization to improve its competitive edge in international market.

China's fishery industry has witnessed rapid development in the past 50 years. Last year, the country's aquatic products totaled more than 40 million tons, accounting for about one-third of the world's total. However, many products are poor in quality due to lack of efficient quality control systems.

Liu urged all localities to speed up the formulation and revision of regulations, and punish those enterprises that produce inferior products.
