China, Thailand Inked Deal to Tap Chinese Hydro-powerChina and Thailand lately reached an agreement to allow Thai investors to build hydro-electric power stations in southwest China's Yunnan province. The deal is the first of its kind allowing a foreign country to invest in and tap hydro-electric power in China. Pei Jian has the details.China and Thailand signed a memorandum in 1998, allowing Thailand to buy the right to tap electricity in China's Yunnan province. It says that in 2017, Thailand will have imported three million kilowatts of electricity from Yunnan. The lately concluded agreement puts the deal three years earlier, allowing Thailand to buy the first 1.5 million kilowatts from the Jinghong Hydro-electric Power Station in the year 2013. And in 2014, Thailand can buy another 1.5 million kilowatts from another two hydro-electric stations in the province. Yunnan province is rich in water resources. The Jinghong Hydro-electric Power Station is the first in China built with foreign investment and oriented to supply the export market. |
