Beijing Kicks off Summer Open-air Shows

Beijing kicked off this year's summer entertainment series on Saturday night with an open-air performance in the square in front of the Beijing Railway Station.

During the two-hour show, an audience of hundreds, many of them travelers, enjoyed music and dances by performers from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Mongolia and Russia.

The entertainment was part of the summer of cultural activities arranged by the Ministry of Culture, the Beijing Municipal Government and other government departments. The event was organized to enrich the cultural life of ordinary citizens in Beijing.

Local officials say the rest of the open-air weekend shows are small and medium-scale artistic performances starring local residents, dances, karaoke, and movie and video presentations in major public spaces, such as Wangfujing Shopping Street.
