Science and Technology Symposium Held in Beijing

More than two hundred scientists and entrepreneurs from Beijing and Taiwan were present for Sunday's opening ceremony of the Science and Technology Symposium.

Beijing's Vice-mayor Zhang Mao told the participants that Beijing has more than 500 scientific research organizations and 1.1 million specialists in various fields.

He said the city has great potential in scientific and technological development and pointed to Taiwan's capital and extensive experience in commercializing scientific developments.

He said this meant good prospects for commercial cooperation by Beijing and Taiwan in science and technology.

Deputy Director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Li Bingcai, in welcoming the Taiwanese participants, said that the OneChina Principle was a prerequisite for cross-straits relations.

Li Bingcai asked Taiwan's scientists to work hard to promote scientific and technological exchanges across the Straits to help with the reunification of the motherland.

The symposium is being sponsored by Beijing's municipal government and the Global Chinese Competitiveness Foundation.
