About 46 million People Travel During Labor Day Holidays

About 46 million people in China toured the country during the first week-long Labor Day holidays. This figure far exceeds that of people who traveled the country during the National Day last year, when 40 million people went out. During the Labor Day holidays, most scenic spots were swamped with tourists. Nearly three million tourists came to Beijing while 1.78 million Beijing residents traveled outside the city, according to tourist authorities.

Transportation also hit a new record. From May 1 to 3, trains carried 4 million passengers per day, surpassing the number of people who traveled during the peak of the Spring Festival. Although 79 extra special trains and 274 temporary trains were put into operation, they could not meet the demand. The number of passengers that flew during the holiday reached 1.7 million, up 34 percent over that in the Spring Festival.

It is estimated that some 2 billion yuan were spent by tourists each day, generating 18 billion yuan for the domestic tourism industry.
