Kunming Flowers Go Back Home With Travelers

Flowers have become the first choice for travelers to Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province, as a reminder of their happy time in the city.

"I have long heard that flowers are abundant here and affordable. I would buy some for my friends," said a young woman from Beijing.

Miss Han chose 12 species, packaged in two boxes, and hugged a big bunch of yellow gerbera. "All of these only cost me some 200 yuan (24 U.S. dollar), so cheap!" Han said smiling.

Twenty carnations sell at only one yuan, and 20 roses just cost 5 yuan in the city. Dry flowers are also in great demands. "They' re easier to carry on the train and a nice memory of my trip to Kunming," said a woman from Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi province.

"Over 90 percent of the customers are from other provinces. The one week Labor Day holiday really brought in lots of revenue," said Liao Jiaming, a florist. He even ordered a large amount of flowers from other places to satisfy great demand.

Staff in Kunming airport said that over 1,000 boxes of flowers were sent out of the city everyday during the holiday.

As a flower plantation base in the country, Yunnan produces over ten billion flowers per year, accounting for half of the total production for the whole nation.
