Artificial Rain Eases Drought in East China

Severe drought affecting some 1.3 million hectares of crops in east China's Jiangsu Province, one of the country's economic powerhouses, has been eased thanks to cloud seeding efforts on Tuesday.

Local sources said today the cloud seeding operations have brought about 10 to 20 mm of rainfall to 23 counties in the northern part of the province.

Drought began to loom in Jiangsu late last year. Since February this year the province has had only one-third as much precipitation as in the same period of normal years. Due to the lack of rainfall, water levels in major lakes and reservoirs in northern Jiangsu have declined to a record low. Measures have also been taken to pump water from the Yangtze River to the drought-stricken areas over the past months.
