China Opposes Swedish PM's Meeting with Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama is a political figure in exile, and the Chinese government is strongly opposed to any official of any country or region inviting and meeting with him under any circumstances and providing him with a venue for his political activities.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made these remarks Thursday at a regular press conference while commenting on a report that Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson will meet with Dalai Lama next week.

She said that the stance of the Chinese government on the issue of Dalai Lama is consistent and clear.

The Swedish side, despite the solemn representation of the Chinese side, allowed Dalai Lama to come to Sweden and upgrades the standard of reception, she noted, adding that "we feel strong dissatisfaction with this."

Zhang said that China hopes the Swedish side will treat the representation of the Chinese side seriously, respect the feelings of the Chinese people, value the good atmosphere and momentum of bilateral relations, and solve the issue cautiously and properly.
