Shanghai to Become Hub for Transportation and Digital Communications

Shanghai will strive to become a hub of air transportation, shipping, and digital communications over the next 15 years, said Han Zheng, deputy mayor of Shanghai, at a symposium Monday.

According to a source at the symposium, the first phase of construction work of the Pudong International Air Port was completed last September, putting Shanghai on the road to becoming the first city in the country with two international airports. The government also improved the container terminal at Waigaoqiao, and the total container volume passing through Shanghai was seventh in the world last year.

So far the city has completed a platform, five backbone network projects, and 20 application systems to enhance its digital communications and data transmission.

Leaders from the State Development Planning Commission, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Information Industry, and about 270 experts took part in the symposium.
