Estrada: Philippines Supports China's WTO Entry

Visiting Philippine President Joseph Ejercito Estrada told Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Wednesday morning that the Philippines supports China's accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO), during a meeting between them.

Zhu met with Estrada, who was on his first ever state visit to China, at Zhongnanhai, site of China's Central Government.

Thanks to the direct care given by leadership from the two countries and the efforts made by the two governments, Philippine- Chinese relations have witnessed continuous growth, Estrada said, adding that both countries are holding various activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He praised Zhu's visit to the Philippines last November and his attendance at an informal meeting of East Asia leaders "not only injected impetus into Philippine-Chinese relations but also to the success of the meeting."

The Philippines highly values its full-round cooperation with China, in particular bilateral economic and trade cooperation, he said, adding that his country was satisfied with results already achieved.

After expressing his support of China's WTO accession, Estrada expressed his hope and belief that China will continue to safeguard the rights and interests of developing countries after it obtains WTO membership and continue in its efforts to narrow the gap between developing countries and developed countries.
