New China Telecom Opens

After a massive reshuffle, China Telecom officially opened on May 17.

With registered capital of 220 billion yuan and more than 500, 000 employees, the newly-established company is a large state- owned enterprise.

To introduce competence to China's telecom industry, the government has reshuffled the former largest telecom operator, cutting its mobile telecom business to establish China Mobile, and transferring its paging business to China Unicom.

Zhou Deqiang, manager of the newly-established firm, said the new firm will further improve telecom infrastructure construction and develop more new services and products to cater to consumers. Attention will be paid to the construction of a backbone transmission network and developing new service items such as IP telephone, e-commerce and education.

The expansion of traditional fixed telephone business will also be high on the agenda, especially in the western part of the country, said Zhou.
