FM Spokeswoman Slams Ishihara's Remarks on Taiwan

A spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday lashed out harshly at Japanese Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara's remarks concerning the Taiwan issue and requested the Japanese government to properly handle the Taiwan issue.

"Ishihara has always been hostile to China and the Chinese people and repeatedly attempted to disturb and undermine the normal development of Sino-Japanese relations", said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing, labeling the Tokyo governor as a "notorious anti-China activist, whose evil motives are clearly seen by all."

"He who openly sets himself against the Chinese people will come to no good end," said Zhang.

Addressing another question concerning Ishihara's invitation to former Taiwan leader Lee Teng-hui for a visit to Japan, Zhang said that China hopes that the Japanese government, on the basis of the principles of the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and the Sino- Japanese Joint Declaration, will properly handle matters relating to the Taiwan issue.
