Government Officials Punished Over Three Gorges Scandal

Twenty-one government and Party officials in Fengdu County under the Chongqing Municipality in southwest China were punished Tuesday for their neglecting their duties in the notorious Three Gorges Scandal.

Gao Rongmiao, former Party Secretary of the County was striped of his party membership, and Li Renfu, former head of the county, is no longer deputy Party secretary.

The two have been hold responsible for failing to stop Huang Faxiang, former chief of the Fengdu National Land Bureau, from misappropriating and embezzling government funds allocated for resettling people in the massive Three Gorges project.

Huang has been sentenced to death by a Chongqing court.

Gao Rongmiao was also found guilty of illegally allocating two million yuan of resettlement funds and taking high bonuses and expensive gifts.

Among the punished, seven are county-level officials and one is Huang's wife Chen Zhiqiong, who used to be deputy Party secretary of the county. She was also charged with embezzlement. Chen has been stripped of her party membership.
