North China Port City to Clean Polluted Rivers

Eightytwo-year-old Wang Yuzhen has been living along the small polluted Feiqiangzi River in Hexi District of Tianjin City ever since she was a little girl.

Wang could not contain her excitement when she was told that the river would be cleaned up and trees planted along its banks.

The project is scheduled to be completed in October this year. Wang is only one of the 240,000 people living along the 4.8- kilometer river who will benefit from the ongoing river cleaning project by the municipal government.

Tianjin decided to spend 120 million yuan (14.5 million U.S. dollars) on the project.

Tianjin will clean eight more rivers in three years and strictly prevent pollutants from being poured into these rivers.
