Wuhan Science and Engineering University Sets up

Wuhan Science and Engineering University was inaugurated in WU Han Saturday.

The university was formed by merging the former Wuhan Polytechnical University, Wuhan University of Communications Science and Technology, and Wuhan University of Automobile Industry. Though all three universities are engineering-oriented, each has a distinct emphasis.

The new university has eight colleges with 48 disciplines. It has two state-listed laboratories, 6,600 faculty members, and 30, 000 students.

The establishment of the new university represents another step taken by China to reform its system of higher learning and promote the rational use of its educational resources.

Zhejiang University, one of the largest and most comprehensive institutions of higher learning in China, was formed in September last year by combining four universities, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University, and Zhejiang Medical University, all in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.
