Legend Helps Chinese Toshiba Laptop Users

Toshiba's partner in China, the Legend Corporation, announced in Beijing Friday it will provide Toshiba laptop owners free patch-up programs and technical support to repair a potential floppy disk controller error.

Legend has set up a special task force to test the disk drive error, but has not so far encountered data loss problems.

However, if Legend confirms that customers have suffered losses from the disk drive defect, it will do what it can to protect their rights, including negotiating with Toshiba.

The announcement came after a two-week war of words between Toshiba and Chinese computer users who were angered by Toshiba's slow response and inadequate explanations of the flaw.

The disk drive flaw in Toshiba's laptop computers could cause data loss or corruption when the computer is running multiple programs at the same time, a Toshiba spokesman admitted last week in Beijing.

Some Chinese users are now seeking compensation. But, Toshiba said no compensation would be given to Chinese users because China 's consumer protection laws are not as stringent as in the United States.

Debate of Toshiba's refusal to compensate Chinese users is heating up on the Internet and among people who work in information technology.
