China to Modernize Cuban Telecommunications

China announced Monday that it would help modernizing Cuba's telecommunications network, with a bilateral accord of financing for 200 million U.S. dollars.

The announcement was made during a meeting between Cuban Minister of Information Technology and Communications Ignacio Gonzalez Planas, and China's Information Industry Minister Wu Jichuan, who has been on a four day visit to Cuba since last Saturday.

At the meeting, Rafael Marrero, President of Company Telecommunications of Cuba, S.A. (ETECSA), highlighted China's contribution to achieving this island's program to have in year 2004 over one million service lines, 84 percent of these digitalized, and 50,000 public telephone stations.
