Fiji's Military Declares Martial Law

Fiji's military Monday declared martial law, according to reports of Radio Fiji.

The Pacific nation has been gripped by a constitutional crisis since May 19 when Fijian businessman George Speight and his armed supporters took ethnic Indian Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry hostage in parliament in the capital Suva.

"All the nation has been saddened by the extent to which the country has fallen during the last week," Commodore Frank Bainimarama was quoted as saying in a statement.
