Rainfall to Alleviate Drought in China

Heavy rains and showers are expected to alleviate the sustained drought in the Huaihe and Hanshui river valleys early this month, according to the Central Meteorological Observatory.

Rainfall ranging from 10 to 30 millimeters is forecast for the Sichuan Basin, southern parts of Shaanxi and Hubei provinces, central and southern parts of Henan Province, central and southern parts of Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces, northern part of Hunan Province, central and northern parts of Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces, eastern part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and western part of south China.

The rainfall may be as much 80 to 120 mm in a few isolated areas, the source said, adding that northern part of Xinjiang, eastern part of northwest China, and southern part of north China will also see rain in the next few days.

The rainfall, with occasional rainstorms and strong winds, will possibly influence the harvesting of summer crops. North China has been suffering from a severe drought due to little rainfall and high temperature since early spring.
