Southern Africa to Adopt Common Measures in Fighting Crimes
The Zambian police and its counterparts in neighboring countries are working out uniform deterrent measures to curb escalating violent crimes which have rocked the region in recent months, Times of Zambia newspaper reported on Monday.
This was disclosed on Sunday during a meeting between Zambian Inspector General of Police Silas Ngangula and his counterpart from Swaziland Edgar Hillary who is Southern Africa Regional Police Chief's Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO) Chairman.
According to the report, the issues discussed in the meeting included exploring ways of imposing uniform sentences and other penalties on perpetrators of crime.
It quoted Zambian police spokesman Lemmy Kajoba as saying after the meeting that a number of issues on crime and how it could be reduced were discussed.
"Be it cross border crime or internal aggravated cases, what we need to put in place are uniform sentences so that if in Zambia the mandatory sentence for aggravated robbery is life imprisonment, then it should be the same in the region," Kajoba said.
The high level meeting also emphasized the need to find ways of harmonizing legislation and ratification of such laws in the region.
