Three Gorges Relocations not Far
The Chinese government has announced that about 90 per cent of the residents to be relocated from the reservoir area of the Three Gorges dam project need not move far from their hometowns or travel great distances to work.
Most residents will be able to live close to their former homes, said Wang Hongju, vice-mayor of Chongqing Municipality.
The city is responsible for resettling 85 per cent of the affected residents.
"Most old village names have also been used for the new villages, and the only difference is that the villagers are living in better-quality houses enjoying a better living environment," Wang said.
With the Three Gorges project, China aims to build the world's largest hydropower station by 2009. It calls for relocating 1.07 million residents.
The relocation project has entered its second stage, with 230,000 residents already moved into Chongqing.
