Ningxia Kicks Off Drive to Renovate Great Wall

A ceremony was held on June 8 to mark the start of renovation of a section of the Great Wall in Lingwu and developing tourism in the city.

Lingwu, in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is home to a 1.65-km section of the Great Wall, which was built more than 2,000 years ago.

The current project will be divided into two phases. The first phase will concentrate on repairs of the Lingwu stretch of wall. Work will be completed at the end of this month.

During the second phase, a cableway over the desert, a horse racetrack, and a swimming pool will be built as part of a new tourism zone. The entire project will cost 46 million yuan (5.5 million U.S. dollars) and be completed in 2002.
