Beijing Intellectual Property Right Bureau Founded

The Beijing Intellectual Property Right Bureau was officially founded in Beijing on June 8.

The aim of establishing the bureau is to meet the needs of China's impending entry into the World Trade Organization and the development of knowledge economy. This is an important measure taken by Beijing to gear up to high-tech development in the 21st century, said Wang Jingchuan, deputy commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office.

The Beijing bureau will be responsible for patent management and handle patent affairs involving foreign individuals and organizations.

Beijing was the first city in China to set up intellectual property courts among its higher and intermediate courts in 1993. So far, the city has handled 3,094 cases involving the infringement of intellectual property rights, 93 percent of which have been settled.
