Jiang: Training Young Leaders Important
National Conference on Party Schools Convened

President Jiang Zemin on June 9 called for redoubled efforts to train middle-aged and young leading officials who are attuned to the requirements for work in the new century.
"We should take active measures to select and train a great number of fine young leaders in line with the principle of making the ranks of cadres more revolutionary, younger in average age, better educated and professionally more competent," said Jiang, at a national conference on Party schools held in Beijing on June 9.
It is important to select the right people in the first place, and they must be trained, helped and supervised if they are to become effective leaders, Jiang said.
Global competition today and in the future is one for talent, he added.

Party schools can and should play an important role in training young and middle-aged leading officials, and cadres' school are an important channel for doing so, he said.
When it comes to Party building, it is vitally important to improve the ideological and political quality of leading officials at all levels, especially that of young leaders, in order to make them a new generation of statesmen who are loyal to Marxism, adhere to the socialist road with Chinese characteristics, and are capable of running the Party and the country, Jiang stressed.
He outlined four areas of emphasis for the training of young leaders: They should cultivate a strong Party spirit and persist in the Party's purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly; they should be broad-minded and be good at observing the world situation; they should be able to solve the sticky problems that inevitably crop up in reforms, development and maintaining stability; and they must have a thorough understanding of Marxism.
Young leaders should be selected with an open mind, Jiang said, adding that the outdated practice of choosing leaders based on seniority should be eliminated, and the new crop of leaders should have both political integrity and professional ability.
