Li Peng Holds Talks with Croatian Speaker

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), held talks with Speaker Zlatko Tomcic of the Croatian Assembly Friday.

In a warm and friendly atmosphere, they exchanged views and reached consensus on a wide range of subjects on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, according to sources who attended the talks.

Tomcic said Li's official goodwill visit to Croatia is a major event in the relations between Croatia and China and will certainly further their bilateral relations.

Li said that when Croatia became independent in 1991, China recognized it promptly and established diplomatic ties with it in 1992. The policy decision of the Chinese government was made on the basis of independent foreign policy of peace and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, he added.

Tomcic said that The Croatian government and assembly adhere to the "one China" policy, adding Croatia-China relations have grown smoothly.

He said that Li's current visit to three countries in the former Yugoslav area shows that China treats these countries equally.

Li Peng said Croatia is an important country in mid-Europe. As Croatia's friendly country, China hopes Croatia will enjoy stable political situation and economic development and its people live a happy life.
