Pakistan Vows to Follow Policy of Restraint on Nuclear Issue
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar reiterated his country's commitment to a policy of restraint and responsibility on the nuclear issue, according to a report of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) Saturday.
The foreign minister informed U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot in Washington during the ninth round of Pakistan-U.S. dialogue on nuclear and security-related issues that Islamabad is willing to consider restraint on a non-discriminatory basis, said the report.
"Pakistan is willing to consider measures for restraints on a non-discriminatory, regional and global basis," Sattar said. He added that Pakistan is opposed to nuclear and conventional arms buildup and pursues a policy of maintaining a minimum credible deterrence which could ensure its security.
The Pakistan-U.S. talks also focused on bilateral and regional issues. Both sides emphasized the importance they attach to the dialogue and its continuation in the interest of peace and stability in the region, the report said.
