Over 2,700 Firms in North China Closed for Pollution

Shanxi Province in north China has closed down 2,721 enterprises that cause heavy pollution.

Shanxi, a major energy and chemical industrial base in China, has a number of ill-equipped small coal mines, iron plants and cement factories that are hazardous to the environment.

Discharge of pollution has affected most water sources in the province, posing threats to people's health.

China started to control environmental pollution on a large scale in 1996. But a number of small enterprises in Shanxi are continuing to pollute the environment.

Inspection groups sent by the provincial people's government will go to various areas in the province to bring those lawbreakers to justice.
