Volkswagen to Introduce New Models to China

Volkswagen AG is improving its edge in the Chinese automobile market by manufacturing a more diverse and modern range of products here.

This will serve as the core of Volkswagen's strategy prior to China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), said Zhang Suixin, deputy general manager of the Volkswagen (China) Investment Company Ltd.

Volkswagen will offer the Bora, a new model in its sedan series, to be manufactured next year by its joint-venture company in this capital city of northeast China's Jilin Province. The Bora will replace the Jetta, a Changchun-produced Volkswagen model which has been popular in recent years in China.

Zhang said that the Shanghai Volkswagen Corporation also plans to manufacture a compact family car in 2002 for the Chinese market.

He also revealed that Volkswagen is working on the feasibility of making a new type of cheap cars in China which could be sold both in China and abroad.

The German automobile maker has obtained 50 percent of the Chinese auto market with products made by its two joint ventures in the country: Shanghai Volkswagen Corporation and the Changchun-based FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd.
