Longwan China's Largest Artificial Leather Base

The Longwan District in the city of Wenzhou, in east China's Fujian Province, has become the largest artificial leather production base in the country.

The district has more than 40 artificial leather enterprises, mostly privately owned. They turn out goods worth more than 500 million yuan (about US$60 million) annually, accounting for 40 percent of the country's total.

The artificial leather products come in a large number of varieties, and are famous for their shining colors and soft texture. They can often replace genuine leather as outside materials. They also earned an annual income of US$45 million from leather exports.

In recent years, businessmen in the district, finding that artificial leather products sell well in the international market, have introduced overseas investment to expand their production scale.

At the same time, chemical plants for artificial leather production have also emerged in the district.

Artificial leather enterprises have introduced more than 50 items of state-of-the-art equipment and production lines from Shanghai, Taiwan and Japan.

Investment in each of the production lines surpassed 18 million yuan, while each has an annual production volume of more than 50 million yuan-worth.

Longwan's artificial leather products are exported to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North America.
