Locusts Rampant in Tianjin

Locusts are attacking farms in north China's Tianjin city, forcing it to hire a plane to spray pesticides to kill the insects.

Although large numbers of locusts appear in weeds grown in alkali-affected areas in the city every June, the insects this year seemed to be more fierce due to a drought that continues to devastate the northern part of China.

Some 40,000 hectares of farmland have been attacked by locusts. The density of locusts has also increased. As many as 11 locusts can be seen every square meter of land.

Crop protection officials said that the plane will spray pesticides over 23,000 hectares of farmland. Biological means will also be adopted against locusts.
