Russian Soldier Killed, Two Wounded in Rebel Attack in Grozny

One Russian serviceman was killed and two officers were wounded Monday during a rebel attack on a federal police station in the Chechen capital of Grozny, the Itar- Tass news agency reported Tuesday.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the provisional police station in the Zavodskoy District of Grozny, killing Private Nabibulla Galimov, who is from the Chelyabinsk Region, and injuring Major Alexander Raskatov, commander of the commandant's company of the district, and Police Major Sergei Pentov, said the report.

Automatic weapons and grenade launchers were used in the attack. The wounded were taken to a village hospital, Tass quoted a spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry office in Chechnya as saying.

Earlier this month, the Russian military in the North Caucasus said there were still some 2,000 rebel guerrillas fighting in Chechnya, including around 500 in the capital of Grozny.
