Tung Emphasizes Guaranteeing HK's Sustainable Development

Chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa indicated that the government of the HKSAR is confident of guaranteeing Hong Kong's sustainable development and developing it into an international metropolis in Asia. He made the remarks at the meeting of the International Environmental Influence Evaluation Association held in Hong Kong on June 20.

Tung said that since 1998, Hong Kong has conducted strict evaluation of the HK$170 billion project so as to guarantee that full consideration is given to its influence on the environment and ecology. From the next year, the main policies and strategic suggestions of the regional government must pass the evaluation of influence on sustainable development before the final plan is worked out and put into practice.

Tung said the HKSAR declared two years ago that it would adopt a series of measures to improve Hong Kong's environment, which include reducing the waste gas discharged from vehicles, improving the collection and treatment of sewage, calling on the citizens to decrease producing solid wastes and encouraging the recovery of wastes. Recently, the government also announced the adoption of further measures, including strengthening law-enforcement action, and introduce super-low sulfer-content diesel oil which will greatly help improve HK's air quality.

More than 600 representatives from over 80 countries attended the meeting, which is scheduled to end on June 23.
