Beijing to Renovate Important Historic Sites

The Beijing Municipal government has decided to renovate all the cultural relics under municipal protection so as to preserve them better.

The work will take three years and cost about 330 million yuan (some 40 million US dollars), an official cultural relic administration source said.

"As the capital of one of the world's oldest countries, Beijing is rich in cultural relics, but many of them are now in danger because of the lack of proper protection," said the source.

"About 90 percent of Beijing's historic sites and ancient buildings are now occupied by residents or government departments, " the source added.

There are now 222 municipal-level cultural relics and 42 national-level cultural relics in Beijing. What's more, five of Beijing's cultural relics have been put on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list.
