Zimbabweans to Choose Own Destiny: Trade Unions Leader
Zimbabweans should choose their own destiny and guard against foreign manipulation in the process of democracy, a leader of Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions said on Wednesday.
Acting Secretary-General of the organization Isidore Zindoga told Zimbabwe News Agency that differences between politicians should be dealt with in a Zimbabwean way and foreigners should not take center stage of politics in the Southern African country.
"There might be differences in Zimbabwe on major issues of importance, but we should be careful with the role of foreigners in the affairs of our own country," he said.
He said the huge voter turnout in the just ended parliamentary election and the peaceful voting process showed that Zimbabwe had moved to greater strides in terms of democracy.
"Although there was pre-election violence, people voted freely, suggesting that the intimidation did not affect the voter turnout," he said.
Politicians, he said, should ensure that there was room for political tolerance in order to preserve the nation's integrity.
About 4 million people out of 5 million registered people voted in the tightly contested election, which saw the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front winning with 62 of the 120 seats, followed by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change with 57 seats and then Zimbabwe African National Union (Ndonga) with one seat.
