Legal System Established for Soil Conservation

In the past two years, China has examined and approved 120,000 schemes for soil conservation covering water conservancy, electric power, coal, railway, highway and other development and construction projects, urged development and construction work units to invest over 2 billion yuan in the prevention and control of soil erosion, built more than 20,000 projects of soil conservation and placed an area of over 500,000 square km. under soil conservation and protection.

Regarding the achievements made in soil conservation in recent years, Jiao Juren, director of the Department of Soil Conservation under the Ministry of Water Resources, listed three reasons for the achievements: first, the establishment of perfect law and regulation systems and supervisory and law-enforcement organizations relating to soil conservation. second, breakthrough made in regional division and third, the tightening of law-enforcement inspection.

In the standardization of the supervision and management of comprehensive soil conservation, the Ministry of Water Resources also launched the construction of 1000 counties exercising standardized supervision and management of soil conservation.
