Anti-typhoon Situation in China Remains Grim This YearChina still faces a grim situation in the fight against typhoons this year, according to news from the national conference on the fight against typhoon concluded Wednesday.It's forecasted by the meteorological and oceanic department that there will be the same or more tropical storms and typhoons landing in China's coastal areas and there might be three o five disastrous storms, so the situation of preventing typhoons is still grim this year. In view of this situation, the State Flood-Control and Drought-Relief Headquarters has called on various localities to step up construction of embankments and reinforcement of dangerous reservoirs, to draw up specific anti-typhoon plans with respect to personnel transfer, dispatch of projects, and emergency squads, to pay close attention to meteorological information and to strengthen monitoring over tropical cyclones, in one word, to be fully prepared against typhoons. China, one of the countries suffering from the severest impact of typhoons, is attacked by an annual seven or eight typhoons on average. So far, 56 percent of the embankments haven't met the designed standard and one-tenth of the 328 coastal cities are insufficient in the construction of communication projects for flood prevention forecast and some regions still have quite a few of dangerous houses and perilous reservoirs. |
