China's Listed Companies Hit 1,004

With the listing of Ningbo Bird and four other stocks on the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses today, the number of China's listed companies has topped the expected height of 1,000 to hit 1,004.

China Securities noted that only eight stocks were listed on China's first stock exchange when it was established in Shanghai ten years ago.

Over the decade, the listed companies raised nearly 400 billion yuan from the stock market.

As of Wednesday, outstanding stocks listed on the two bourses were worth more than 1.3 trillion yuan, accounting for 16 percent of China's gross national product in 1999.

By mid-June, there were more than 50 million investors with accounts on the two bourses, about 10 million more than a year ago.
