Business for Taiwan's Largest Chip Maker in June Hit New High

The island's largest computer chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) said Thursday its sales in June doubled from a year earlier to hit a new high of 13.21 billion Taiwan dollars (428.8 million US).

The figure represented a 21 percent growth from the previous month following completion of mergers with TASMC (TSMC-Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) and WSMC (Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), company spokswoman K. C. Chen said.

"Due to the continual growth of the global semiconductor market, the company's production capacity was fully utilized in June," Chen said.

In the first six months to June, TSMC's sales totalled 64.93 billion Taiwan dollars (2.1 billion US), up 114 percent over the same period of 1999.

The company's production capacity was expected to expand to 3.4 million eight-inch wafers annually after the mergers.
