Ministry to Inspect Transport Safety

The Ministry of Communications has decided to launch a nationwide safety inspection of buses, passenger ships, dangerous goods ships and warehouses, docks, stations and water recreation facilities.

In an urgent notice issued Saturday to all transport departments, the ministry said it will send four special groups on July 11 to inspect boat safety on the Yangtze River, the Qiongzhou Strait, the Bohai Bay and the Zhoushan Islands.

It also ordered the transport departments of all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities to launch their own safety inspections.

Leading officials of transport departments should take charge of the inspections, and vehicles and facilities that fall short of the safety standards must be put out of operation, it said.

The notice was issued in the aftermath of a recent safety- improvement order from the State Council which followed a series of alarming traffic accidents.
