Six Killed in Power Plant Explosion in Beijing

An explosion early Sunday morning at the power plant of the Capital Iron and Steel Company killed six workers, Beijing municipal government sources said.

A pipe in the No.3 steamer workshop exploded at about 1 a.m., and the pressurized steam blew through a wall of the workshop, scalding six people inside, sources said.

A vice-mayor and other officials rushed to the plant to supervise the rescue effort.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to resume the power supply to the plant.
