State Councilor Urges West Regions to Take Historical Chances

Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi has urged western Chinese regions to take advantage of the historical chances brought by China's west development strategy and its expected accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

She made the remarks in a recent tour of Sichuan Province in southwest China, during which she visited many local enterprises and was briefed by local officials.

Wu noted that China's opening policy would enter a new stage after its entry into the WTO, which would demand that enterprises improve their international competitiveness.

She reminded the western regions of the importance of foreign trade to local and national economies, and urged them to make the most of their resources and expand their foreign trade.

The State Councilor also urged the west regions to improve their investment environment so that they could attract more investment from overseas as well as from eastern Chinese regions.
