China Builds World's Largest Radio Telescope

Scientists with Beijing Observatory revealed that China has made great technology breakthrough in building a 500-meter- aperture radio telescope (FAST) as the largest known to the world.

Chinese scientists told that FAST is going to be built in Karst depression in Guizhou and will greatly help raise China's status in world's astronomy research.

FAST will have a receiving proportion 10 times greater than the world's largest mobile single antenna telescope. It will provide a high sensitivity and resolution ration ground track and remote equipment for China's deep space exploration, thus filling the blank of American, Spanish, Australian 3 deep space track stations in longitude distribution, realizing 24-hour remote control and communication of the globe.

Since 1999 the Chinese Academy of Sciences has injected 10 million yuan into pre-research of FAST. It is estimated that the whole pre-research work of FAST will be finished by next summer.
