China Urges US to Abandon NMD

A senior Chinese officer Wednesday urged the United States to treat seriously the strong appeal of the international community and abandon the National Missile Defense (NMD) at the earliest time.

Defense Minister Chi Haotian reiterated the stance of the Chinese government in a meeting with US Defense Secretary William Cohen here this morning.

Peace and development are the trend of the time, and the world is moving toward ease, Chi said.

However, the NMD system will have a negative impact on the efforts for global strategic equilibrium and stability, international arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, he stressed.

Cohen introduced the development of the NMD and the Theater Missile Defence (TMD) systems, and said that the US government has not made a final decision about the plans yet.
