Jiang Zemin Urges Military, Civil Cooperation

President Jiang Zemin said that the war industry should be closely linked with other industries so that a vigorous national defense system based on science and technology can be formed.

He made the remarks Friday night in Beijing when visiting a demonstration of war industry achievements, accompanied by vice-president Hu Jintao and other central and military leaders.

"We certainly can make some creations in the fields of world advanced science and technology so long as we make unified and dedicated efforts," said Jiang, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Leadership and coordination should be strengthened to achieve good results in technological innovation and personnel training in a move to promote science and technology in both the war industry and the national economy, he said.

He asked the war industry to closely link itself with other industries, as the nation's defense building depends on the nation 's economic development.

Linking science and research institutions of the war industry with those of other industries should be encouraged so that their joint results can be better used for national defense and economic development, he said.
