Jiang Calls on Promoting Young, Capable Leaders

Jiang Calls on Promoting Young, Capable Leaders
Young and middle-aged officials who can withstand severe tests and stay clear-headed in major struggles and crises should be promoted to leading positions, President Jiang Zemin was quoted as saying by the leading Chinese magazine Seeking Truth, published sunday.

And they should also be able to mobilize and lead the masses to surmount the difficulties, he said.

Jiang, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the call on June 9 in an address at the national conference of Party schools, according to the magazine.

In building the Party, priority should be given to improving the ideological and political quality of leading Party officials, especially young and middle-aged ones, so that they will become a new generation of politicians loyal to Marxism, adhere to the socialist road with China's characteristics, and are capable of running the Party and the State, Jiang said.

"The young and middle-aged officials are the hope of the Party and the nation," he said.

He stressed education on the nature of the Party for the young and middle-aged officials so as to help them adhere to the fundamental principle of devoting themselves to the people.

They should be open-minded so as to be good at judging the general trends of the world's development and correctly assess the demands of the time, he said.

They should be trained to think strategically so that they can resolve major problems in reform, development and stability in a realistic way, Jiang said.

Early this year, Jiang said the CPC represents the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the majority of the Chinese people.

He emphasized that the Party must adhere to the "three representatives" if it wants to abide by the theories on Party building set forth by Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
