Jiang, Putin Describe Talks as Fruitful

President Jiang Zemin and visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin both described their talks in the morning as "fruitful" as they met with the press in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Jiang said in his opening remarks that the first visit to China by Putin as Russia's president is an important event in the history of China-Russia relations, and the two sides pay great attention to it.

The two heads of state held a friendly and practical discussion, exchanged frank views on bilateral relations and cooperation in various areas, and reached consensus.

The two sides signed several agreements based on their talks, Jiang said.

The agreements were the Beijing Declaration and a joint statement on the anti-ballistic missile issue, and two inter-government agreements, one on joint energy development and the other on the construction and operation of a fast-neutron experimental reactor.

The Bank of China also signed a cooperation pact with the Russian Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs.

Jiang said that with the joint efforts of the two sides, the strategic partnership between China and Russia will be deepened in the new century.

Putin said that the aim of his current visit to China is to confirm and consolidate the existing friendly relations between the two countries. He stressed the friendly relations with China should be attributed to the joint efforts of both Russia's first president Boris Yeltsin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Putin said the Russian side holds that it is most important to form a plan ensuring the long-term development of the friendship during his visit.

Russia aims to carry out successful cooperation with China in international relations and in security and economic areas, he said.

The Russian president said his current visit to China has gotten off to a fine start and has been "fruitful."
