China Calls for Cooperation with UK in Crackdown on Illegal Immigration

China is calling for cooperation with Britain in fighting illegal immigration activities, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao at a regular press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Zhu was responding to a question on the recent death of 58 illegal Chinese immigrants in the English port of Dover.

Zhu said relevant Chinese departments are collecting blood samples from family members of the dead, and the British police are welcome to come to China once laboratory work on the blood samples has been done.

Zhu said the Chinese government wants to get support on the matter from Britain and to cooperate with the British government in investigating illegal immigration activities.

He expressed the hope that both China and Britain, especially Britain, will conduct careful investigations into the tragedy and punish those persons responsible.
