Chinese Premier Holds Talks with Russian President

Premier Zhu Rongji met with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Great Hall of the People Tuesday afternoon.

Zhu said that Putin is known to many ordinary Chinese although it is the president's first visit to China since he became Russian president.

Zhu also said that China is making all preparations for the upcoming regular meeting between Chinese premier and Russian prime minister in October.

This morning, Chinese President Jiang Zemin held formal talks with Putin and the two heads of state singed a number of important documents.

Sources close to Chinese Foreign Ministry said Putin will also meet with Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, later this afternoon.
